My life as a Rule of Law Field Support Officer (ROLFSO) has gotten a little more varied, as I’m now responsible for two districts in the Helmand Province. While I’ll still cover my old district, chances are that I’ll spend more time in my new district, where the rule of law is less advanced. Without crossing the old OPSEC threshold (can I call it an “OPSEC spoiler”?), I’ll say that the base I’ll be working from is slightly larger than my old base, with similar living conditions (although I now have access to toilets that flush), and similar work partners. I also now reside in a place called “The Cave,” which is a mud-brick structure that may or may not have been used by Taliban at some point in the past. I’m intentionally leaving that vague to add to the mystique and/or my street-cred. Also, I’m working to change the name to the Batcave, because calling it the “ROLFSO Cave” just doesn’t strike fear into the hearts of evil-doers.
By the way, apologies if you are offended by this photo–but I thought it was too funny not to include.
